“Everybody pities the weak. Jealousy you have to earn.”

~ Arnold Schwarzenegger

We have 24 hours in a day.

Arnold says we only need to sleep six of them. And for those who insist they need eight or nine hours, his advice is simple:

Sleep faster.

The Man Who Had Every Excuse

When Arnold came to the United States, he had nothing. Couldn’t speak the language. Slept on couches. Worked as a bricklayer. Got told his name was too long, his accent was too thick, and his bodybuilder’s physique was too weird for film.

He didn’t belong anywhere.

So he became the most famous actor on the planet. Ran for governor with zero political experience. Won. Twice.

Every excuse he could have made, he didn’t. And that’s the lesson.

Not the sleep hack. Not the 24-hour productivity math. The mindset underneath it: no one cares about your excuses except you. The world doesn’t owe you a break because you had a hard start.

Victimhood feels good in the moment. My toddler figured that out at age two. The problem is, it stays a toddler strategy for a lot of adults.

What This Looks Like in Recruiting

Are you blaming the economy? The clients who aren’t hiring? The candidates who won’t pick up the phone?

Maybe the market really is slow. Maybe candidates really are more difficult than they were three years ago.

It doesn’t matter.

Because you can blame everything and everyone, and at the end of it, you’re still in the same spot. Nothing moves until you do.

The recruiter who points at the market loses to the recruiter who asks: what can I change about myself and my approach to move forward anyway?

Your Action Item

Every morning, look in the mirror and tell yourself: I am not a victim of my circumstances. I am a victor over them.

Sounds cheesy. Do it anyway.

And during the day, any time you feel the pull toward a complaint, a blame, a “well, it’s hard because” , catch it. Refuse it. Forge a path forward instead.
